Care for the Environment
All our operational facilities-farms, factories and hatchery-are configured to function with as little environmental impact as possible. In particular, we have taken appropriate measures to minimize environmental pollution from waste disposal. The chicken-processing factory, for example, is equipped with a modern Stork Aqua water-treatment plant. This costly
Dutch-manufactured and installed system ensures that treated water from the plant meets all prescribed parameters so that it can be used for irrigation or released safely into the environment. As it happens, this treated water is used solely for irrigation by means of a sprinkler and drip system that water teak and coconut plantations near factory. Meanwhile, the solid by-products from poultry processing are recycled into a feed ingredient at our rendering plant.
An odour-control system designed and fabricated by the industrial Technology Institute has been installed. In addition to making sure no unpleasant odour is emitted, the system is also an example of our support for domestic science and technology
Community Relations
The Company was involved in numerous charitable activities and sponsorships over the course of the year. Of particular note, among these, is a donation of Rs.100,000/- to a community centre in the Gampaha District. The funds are being used to construct an access road.
As it does every April, the Company also sponsored a cycle competition and provided assistance for community celebrations for the Sinhala and Tamil New Year among communities neighbouring its farms and factories.
A more lasting contribution to the community is the provision, at the request of the universities and the National Apprentice and Industrial Training Authority (NAITA), of regular in-plant training for graduate students in microbiology and veterinary science at our microbiology and eliza laboratory and in our farms.
